Finito a aplauduji ve stoje

. Jako nezávislému projektu "amatérů" z Dark Engineering Guild dávám 10/10. Ve srovnání s normální komerční produkcí 9,5/10.
Hlavní hrdinka Zaya
Five years in the making by a group of gaming enthusiasts and Thief fans from around the globe, Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age is a full-blown expansion to Thief 2.A prequel that bridges the timeline between Thief and Thief 2, T2X tells the story of Zaya, a young Egyptian woman who sails her cargo ship to The City, where her cousin Kedar has opened an import business. Shortly after her arrival, she witnesses Kedar’s brutal attack by smugglers, then flees for her life through the city streets to take refuge in an old condemned mansion. This turn of events leads to her fateful meeting with the mysterious Malak, who sets her on a path of revenge that drives the rest of the story.
Had T2X been published by EIDOS and sold in stores, you wouldn’t have thought for a minute that it was fan-made. All of the elements are there: a full 13-mission campaign, an integrated story, professional quality movies, exceptional game art, extensive voice acting, superb production values. Some people have already called T2X the “real” Thief 3 (in reference to the much-maligned Thief: Deadly Shadows), but that isn’t really fair or accurate. T2X is, as it was intended, a true expansion to Thief 2 as opposed to its successor. Using the same Dark Engine, it improves certain aspects of Thief 2 while adding its own twist to familiar elements.
What a treat it is to be able to go back and play an old classic again with a new story and new missions. The creators of T2X did a great job of preserving the old game while adding numerous changes – some that enhance gameplay, many simply cosmetic – to keep things fresh.
The core gameplay is the same, and Thief veterans
will be immediately comfortable with it. Sneaking is as fun as it ever was in T2X.
Missions do a good job of progressing the story, which unfolds as you complete your objectives
Thief 2X is no half-assed cobble. Its production values are as good as those of a studio game. The creators added dozens of new 3D models, along with myriad new textures, art pieces, sprites and effects. More than 3,000 lines of original dialogue were recorded for 2X, along with many thousands of words of narrative. Each mission is preceded by the same style of animated briefing we saw in Dark Project and Metal Age—Zaya's narrative punctuating a choreographed mélange of hand-drawn stills and Photoshopped effects.
The most impressive audio achievement in this game is the extensive new dialogue with numerous characters. Many of the overheard conversations or mutterings of characters are quite funny, and the voice acting is mostly pretty good. There’s even more dialogue in T2X than you will find in any of the other Thief games, and that’s saying something.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of T2X is how easily it is to forget your playing on a pre-millennium game engine. A testament to the quality of the mod, but also to the engine itself. Sure, there isn’t much detail and there are glitches here and there, but the tangible gloom and excellent use of ambient effects lift the experience beyond mere considerations like polygon count.
A lot of people, five years into an exhausting project for which they'd receive no recompense and possibly no recognition, would have called it quits. Especially when one considers how far technology has come from the Dark Engine—sure, it holds up really well, but it is obviously old, and that's got to be discouraging. That this team chose to stick it out says a lot about their tenacity, dedication, drive and ambition to create something genuinely worthwhile
Díky chlapci.
The Dark Engineering Guild did pure good for the industry in releasing something so professional, so enjoyable and so obviously a labor of fervent passion: they proved that independents can make magic too
Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age is a must for any Thief fan. It both extends and enhances the gameplay of the original games, while adding substantial new lore to the Thief universe. Garrett’s world is now bigger and better than ever, even if he isn’t there to enjoy it this time around.
It is an extremely rare thing indeed, and the culmination of a lot of hard work from a lot of people. It may not enjoy the longevity that we associate with multiplayer mods, but it fully deserves to be played and remembered alongside other games in the series.
Of the countless ways
in which to lose one’s balance,
The pursuit of vengeance
eclipses most others,
Luring the unwary from his path,
turning the willful into a weapon,
And leading the fool
to embrace his own undoing

But while single player mods may not hold the same prestige as their multiplayer counterparts, one thing holds true for both: for every hard disc full of half-finished, ill-conceived or downright generic modifications, there comes along a genuine masterpiece crafted over a long period of time by talented and passionate gamers.
Not that you wouldn’t be forgiven for failing to notice: T2X went through no public beta phases, received very little hype and was developed in such secrecy the some people doubted or perhaps eventually forgot its existence. But like most labours of love, this project was about much more than simply titillating a few desperate and die-hard fans.
